Insurance is not a simple subject by any means. The average insurance policy is a very complex legal document and there could be as many as 20 or even more pages of terms and conditions, the breaking of any of which could invalidate the policy totally. Despite this it is probable that the overwhelming majority of people in the UK have never read an insurance policy from start to finish in their lives. As a result very few people can be absolutely certain of just what is their policies cover them for and, perhaps far more importantly, what they do not.

To muddy the waters even further, it seems to be the done thing nowadays, possibly as a consequence of the fact that many budgets are under stress as a result of the credit crunch, to buy commodities on price and price alone. We all know that the cheapest is not always the best, but today's fashion seems to be to ignore that old piece of worldly wisdom! One sign of this trend is the birth and growth of the ubiquitous price comparison website.

Comparison websites have a very useful role to play when prospective purchasers are searching for a brand named television set or a washing machine, and are looking for the lowest cost supplier of any product which they can specify exactly. Sadly insurance does not fall into this category! To make life more complicated rather a large proportion of the major insurance price comparison sites are owned by insurance companies which, naturally, feature their own products alongside those of their competitors. It would be highly cynical to suggest that they would recommend their own products when others could have been considered more suitable, but then no insurance company would do that would they!

It is also interesting to see that some comparison sites claiming that they look through hundreds or even thousands of policies to find the cheapest one for a client, when there are only several dozen insurance companies in the UK! To muddy the waters further, it is quite common for several different comparison websites to recommend different policies when given the same criteria, even in many cases coming up with different prices from the same company.

It is a reasonable conclusion to come to, that price comparison sites may have a useful, indeed valuable, part to play in helping the public to save money. It is hard to escape the conclusion that insurance is not one of those products that they should be trusted with promoting.
